go eat

last updated June 27, 2014

Here is the list of restaurants. Most, if not all, of these have been mentioned or pictured in the blog. Finally, all the pertinent details are in one place for your convenience, including my favorite(s). Please note: in many cases, I haven’t tried a lot of things on the menu. I am a creature of habit; if something tastes good, I’ll keep ordering that item until the end of time. So, yeah — I don’t know how the other stuff on the menu is, but the one thing I order is great, at least to me.

These are all located in California and Nevada, but I’ll add more if I get the chance to travel. You can always send me your favorites from your area and I’ll make a note of it for when I visit.

Listings first organized by CITY’S geographic location (north to south) within the STATE, and then alphabetically.

San Francisco

Fried Egg Sandwich with Bacon and Tomato A M E R I C A N
Beachside Coffee Bar & Kitchen
4300 Judah St, SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94122 • (415) 682-4961 • Mon-Thu Sun 8am-9pm, Fri-Sat 8am-9:30pm
Cozy little spot two blocks from the beach with a solid menu. Ideal alternate when the much more popular (and more expensive) Outerlands restaurant has a three-hour wait for brunch on a Sunday (that really happens, all the time). I have only had breakfast and brunch here, but their lunch and dinner items look tasty.
Fried Egg Sandwich $8.75

Spiffy ice cream spot with unusual as well as traditional flavors and sundaes. New flavors often introduced. First time I had ice cream with olive oil and sea salt here. Yeah. I know. It was really, really good. Long lines inevitable, especially on sunny days.

I always, and I mean ALWAYS, get a roast duck to go when I come home. I get another one for the road when it’s time to leave and try to make it last as long as possible. It never lasts past a few hours. Cash only.
Roast Duck $8.75 Half/$14 Whole
The Cliff House
1090 Point Lobos, SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94121 • (415) 386-3330 • click on the link or call for the hours, it’s too complicated to list them all
There are two sides to the restaurant: Sutro’s and the Bistro. Sutro’s is more upscale, Bistro more casual (although both are pricey). I’ve been to Sutro’s once and had one item there (it was good). I’ve been to the Bistro for brunch and I’ve only ever had Classic Eggs Benedict. Yum. Their complimentary popovers inspired me to learn to bake.
BISTRO: Classic Eggs Benedict $14.95 | SUTRO’S: Braised Mussels $23 lunch entree/$16 dinner appetizer

hot ginger lemon apple cide with bourbon A M E R I C A N

GREAT FOOD but the waits are correspondingly RIDICULOUS. Get in line early, very early. They do not have an extensive menu, but they do not need one — they execute the items they have extremely well. Have yet to be disappointed with anything I’ve ordered. I always get the Hot Ginger Lemon Apple Cider with Bourbon. It’s so good even my mom doesn’t care that I’m drinking. In fact, she’ll sneak sips when I’m not looking.
Hot Ginger Lemon Apple Cider with Bourbon $10

Financial District restaurant traces its roots to the Gold Rush. I usually come here for corned beef, occasionally get their signature dish, the Hangtown Fry (oysters and bacon frittata). Brother and his boss always get the branzino (whole broiled fish). New England clam chowder made deep impression on me because it’s better than mine. Spicy Bloody Mary with real horseradish handles the hangovers.

First went to this place in the middle of a heavy rainstorm. It was a little creepy to be the only person there, but damn, the food was good. I had the wild boar with cherry sauce and a three-berry pie. I went back a few years later and there were LOTS more people (and the prices were higher, of course), but the food was still good.

This is a Roy Choi (of Chego fame) restaurant. Watermelon cocktail available during the summer called “Spittin’ Distance” (vodka, watermelon, black pepper syrup, lime, Maldon salt, fresh cracked black pepper) is fantastic. Stone-cold AMAZING. Spectacular hot and cold deli with spectacular waits during peak hours and weekends. Most famous item is the Godmother sandwich with The Works. Freshly made ones are in basket on deli counter to save you the wait. Order online for same-day pick-up. Phenomenal beverage selection as well as jaw-dropping selection of imported gourmet foods, cheese, and wine. They enable my torrone candy addiction.

This is Nordstrom Santa Monica’s restaurant and it is good. The prices look low but keep in mind that everything is served tapas-style, meaning the portions are appetizer-sized. If you are very hungry, you may end up spending quite a bit because the food is delicious.

Haven’t tried anything besides the items listed below because I am a creature of habit and those choices never let me down. They often do $20 for $40 Groupons and I get those when they pop up as it is a very good deal. One day I will steal a set of their barbed-wire plates and bowls.

Great restaurant focusing on pasta. “Create Your Own Pasta”: choose pasta, sauce (they have several), and add-ins like chicken. One of the few restaurants where I actually try different things because their Pasta Specialties are all consistently good. Cream. Butter. Garlic. Generous portions. Tiny parking lot. Insane waits during peak hours. Call for takeout.

Yakitori-ya famous for its chicken wings, and rightly so. They are addictive. Food served in small portions. Consume fried goodies with liberal servings of beer. My brother’s favorite is “Butter Scallops” which are… scallops cooked in butter. Most fun we had here was watching a blind date go up in flames.

135 Pine Ave, LONG BEACH, CA 90802 • (562) 437-1184 • Mon-Thu Sun 10am-10pm, Fri-Sat 10am-11pm
This is where I used to go after a day out on the water deep-sea fishing. Ohhh yeah. The owner, George himself, used to come sit and chat with us. This was when the Long Beach location was in a very small, cozy spot with murals on the walls and garden trellises decorated with fake grapevines. They’ve since moved to swankier digs down the street. I miss the character of the old location, but the food is still extremely legit.

Best Persian restaurant in Los Angeles and my brother’s favorite stop on my Los Angeles food tour. My mother loves their Olivieh Salad. Transcendent Basmati rice. Lunch menu (M-F, 11:30am-3:00pm) is a pretty good deal, otherwise, things can get pricey although the quality is excellent. When I make a score, I get Combination Appetizer Platter to go and try to make it last three days.

After an evening of pool and beer, this is the best nightcap. Hot mustard is great for sobering up and clearing sinuses. Complimentary old silver bowl of deli pickles served to you with plastic fork. Menu also features other diner classics although I have not tried anything but the Hot Pastrami.

Great weekend brunch spot. Staff of good-looking waiters are all Real French Dudes. Hawt. Fine selection of both sweet and savory crepes. Friendly, shabby-chic countryhouse decor. Although their specialty is crepes, I have only ordered Les Pain Perdus (Brioche French Toast) because it was fantastic and always has been. I do plan to try a savory crepe the next time I go.

Not too “fusion-y” and the food is quite faithful to the original Chinese dishes. Tapas-style, we shared two items per person. Hawaiian Butterfish was our favorite by a mile, eat it sparingly (1 or 2 plates) or suffer the wax-ester consequences.

Best French restaurant in Los Angeles with two Michelin stars. Priced accordingly. Staff a little hit-or-miss: I once experienced your stereotypical unpleasant haughty French waiter. Highly recommend “Ten” tasting menu: ten seasonal courses for $150 (not including tax, tip, or drinks), allow four hours to enjoy. I save up to eat here once every couple of years.

THE place to go for fresh oysters, clams, and other delicious ocean critters. By far the widest and best selection of shelled edibles. Only place I know that carries Steamer Clams from the East Coast. They will also steam the live lobster or crab of your pick. They have smoked fish, fresh fish market, fried fish counter, and several varieties of ceviche and poke. And live sea urchins.
Live uni is pricey, I think $15 per pound, East Coast Steamers $11.95/lb, Tua Tua Clams $9.95/lb, Ahi Tuna Poke $9.95/lb, fresh oyster prices vary

Best steak of my life was from this place. It was a 24oz bone-in ribeye with a peppercorn sauce. I still dream about it. Otherwise, cozy spot with good food. They participate in DineLA and for $25 (not including tax, tip, or drinks), their three-course dinner option was a complete steal. I only come here during DineLA when I can afford it.
Ask about the specials. Specials I have enjoyed: Ribeye with Peppercorn Sauce (sigh) $38, Beef Stew from DineLA menu.

Otherwise, I like the Triple Berry Shortcake best out of their extensive and beautiful selection. They also have pastries, pies, cookies, desserts, breads, coffee and tea.

Delicious as-you-like-it ramen spot. Order (and customize your order) via iPads mounted on the wall. When done, a receipt prints out and you take it to the hostess to be seated. Small space, limited seating, but it’s all worth it. Open late. Cures hangovers.

If I’m at Hard Times Bellflower, this is my preferred place to get food. It’s not close, so you’ll have to drive to pick it up or convince someone to do it for you. I’ve only had the Beef Satay Combination, but I hear the rest of the menu is good, too.

Bright green decor to remind you everything has a lil bit o’ lime (TLT stands for The Lime Truck). Nice selection of fusion tacos, my favorites are pork belly, seared ahi tuna, and beef short rib. Short rib quesadilla also very nice as is the $4 side of sauteed shishito peppers. Prices much higher than standard taco trucks, but that’s the way it is. Cures hangovers.
Pork Belly, Beef Short Rib Taco $4, Seared Ahi Tuna Taco $5, Beef Short Rib Quesadilla $9

Red Velvet cupcake here is the best I’ve had. Moist cake, just-right frosting, and nothing too overly-sweet (weird thing to say about cupcakes, I know). Many, many flavors — they even incorporate Maker’s Mark whisky. Seriously, their list is insane. My favorite flavors: Red Velvet, Chocolate Coconut, Lemon Raspberry, and Vanilla Apricot.

Everything is very fresh. First time I ever saw luxury office chairs at a sushi bar. Located in hole-in-the-wall at a strip mall which gives it extra street cred. Reservations are a must and they prefer you be done eating in an hour (annoying, but oh well). Have yet to afford it, but I hear omakase is the way to go.

Order all the stuff you usually get for Korean BBQ. Be sure to include an order of their famous pork belly from a pig that is only raised on a single Korean island. At the end of the meal, a server will come and cook all your leftovers (if any) with some additional ingredients to make fried rice you can take with you!

The best restaurant water, ever. For real. Don’t know what they put in it or how it’s filtered or if they stole it from elves and fairies — it’s f#cking refreshing as all hell. When the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships was held just down the ways at the Riviera, I came here almost every evening to have their sundubu (spicy tofu soup). I also love their buffet-style selection of side dishes that include seasonal options.
